Funny story how I proposed to Elizabeth. Naturally for a couple of over thinkers things were a little backwards. Elizabeth had half the wedding planned before I got around to popping the question. To me it seemed strange to ask her to marry me before I knew where we were going to live or work. About the time we came up with a date I figured we would just have to straighten that out later if I was going to have a ring to give her on the big day. So I went about asking Elizabeth’s father and mother for permission to ask for her hand. Glen was mostly concerned about my gypsy lifestyle and Roann was pretty much the same except for how hopeful she was that I might be able to keep Elizabeth in this country.
When it came to the ring I had an idea of what she liked and went to the nearest jeweler and had her ring made. It was supposed to take 7 days to be made. Somewhere in the process of the ring being made Elizabeth planned a zero notice trip out to Houston to see me. I was more than happy to see her but I had no idea how to propose and didn’t know if the ring would be ready in time. So I left it to God. I figured if the ring was ready I would propose in Houston and if not I would propose in California. The ring was finished the day before Elizabeth got there so I began to make plans and reservations for some sort of memorable weekend on short notice.
I knew she wanted to see the Space Center Houston (which was really cool…They have a huge rocket in there…the Saturn something). As I was saying, we were wandering around the space center and all the while I’m trying to hide this ring box in my pocket, waiting for an opportune moment to pop the question. But none arrived. So we went home to get ready for dinner. This was a pretty nice place so we were dressing to impress. The only problem was my slacks wouldn’t hide the ring in my pocket. I thought about it for a moment and decided the safest place was in my boot.
The night went on like that with me walking around with a wedding ring in my boot. All through dinner I kept waiting for a moment and again none arrived. I was beginning to wonder if I was going to ask her at all or if I was going to get the ring out of my boot any time soon. As we left the restaurant I was trying to find a way to drag the night out as Elizabeth was fading quick due to jet lag. We decided to go home and lite a fire and relax under the stars. We got the fire going and a blanket just in case and relaxed for about 5 minutes while I struggled to think of a way to make this memorable and special. Then I realized I had to fish this ring (in its box) out of my boot to ask her. Finally I just gritted my teeth, got down on one knee, told her how I felt about her and offered her the ring still warm from hours in my boot. For reasons I still don’t know she said yes and I have no doubts that we will remember the day I proposed.
